The two video and audio I/O (input/output) streams of Sting are defined, more accurately, as being half-duplex i.e. they are each capable of recording material or playing that same material out depending upon the client requirement. Additionally, this I/O does not even need to be video; it could equally well be data files. Such versatility results in the system being used in any one of 5 possible configurations and sometimes even used in more than one configuration, depending upon the workflow required. The possible combinations are shown below:

Add the above versatility with high capacity, uncompressed video quality and the potential applications far exceed that of previous disk-based systems. In fact, Sting's major competitor is not other disk systems but VTRs themselves.
Sting is ideal for:
1. Time Delay of Television
Channels
2. Sports Action Replays & Editing
3. Transmission
Server
4. Telecine Server
5. VTR Replacement in Edit Suites
6.
Stop Frame Recording and Animation Playout
7. Key and Fill
Synchronous Playout for Sport OBs
8. Studio Shot Box for Game
Shows & Live Events
9. Image restoration
10. ISO Camera
Recorder
11. Autoconforming

The built in Web server
supports the use of standard PC Web browsers on any connected
network. A selection of pages allows for clip selection, playlist
generation and EDL upload/ download. Transport controls allow remote
control of the system without the need for a local control panel.
Custom pages can easily be created using standard HTML commands.
The
browser interface offers the user the most flexible expansion of the
system. In true Open Platform style, the interface is simple to set
up and adds a host of useful features at almost no cost.
Support of standard IP protocols, over Gigabit Ethernet, allows for rapid transfer of data files between the Sting and host computers (SGI, Apple, Macintosh & Sun).
With the gigabit Network option this file transfer can take place faster then real-time. Sting to Sting networking can expand the capabilities still further.
