MOLINARE INSTALLS 4-HOUR EDIFIS STING
Molinare, one of Britain's foremost studio post-production and broadcast playout facilities, has chosen an Edifis Sting dual channel disk recorder for installation at its premises in Fouberts Place, Soho. Sting will form the record/playback centrepiece of a linear editing suite where one of its applications will be to package live incoming sports using Sting's simultaneous record/play capability.
Molinare technical director Darren Woolfson comments: "Sting was a logical choice in this application, being more versatile, faster and more price-efficient and than any comparable VTR. It gives us four hours of uncompressed 4:2:2 video and digital audio storage without the head-wear and tape-abrasion synonymous with VTs. Edifis also has an excellent reputation for the high standard of its after-sales support."
The two video and audio I/O (input/output) streams of Sting are each capable of ingesting content or playing out the same material. The programme stream can be audio and video or raw data files, allowing the system to be used in any one of five configurations or combinations of configuration.
Sting's integral Web server supports the use of standard PC browsers via any connected network for clip selection, playlist generation and EDL upload/download. Transport controls allow remote control of the system without need for a local control panel. Custom pages can easily be created using standard HTML commands.
The browser interface offers the user the most flexible expansion of the system. In true Open Platform style, the interface is simple to set up and adds a host of useful features at almost no cost.
Support of standard IP protocols, over Gigabit Ethernet, allows rapid transfer of data files between Sting and host computers (SGI, Apple, Macintosh & Sun). With the gigabit network option, this file transfer can take place faster than real-time. Sting to Sting networking can expand the capabilities still further.
Established by Stefan Sargeant and Robert Parker in 1973, Molinare (www.molinare.co.uk) moved to Fouberts Place four years later. The company is today a member of Television Corporation PLC and remains at the forefront of television post-production and transmission.
Formed in July 1997 and located at the centre of Britain's electronics industry, Edifis (www.edifis.com) has achieved a high reputation for large-capacity uncompressed digital video and audio systems meeting film, post-production and broadcast requirements worldwide. Edifis hardware and software are independent of third-party computer manufacturers or operating systems, allowing very reliable products to be produced at cost-effective prices to meet the rigours of outside broadcasting and for mission-critical on-air transmission.
