We provide system solutions to a wide variety of broadcasters; post production and film facilities based on our proprietry image processing and storage technology. The engineers at Edifis have many years of experience designing both control systems and disk based equipment for the broadcast industry.
We have always designed our own hardware and software and it is this independence from third party computer manufacturers or operating system vendors which ensures we have total control over design modifications, delivery and upgrades. Our systems do not rely on the vagaries of PC fashion but are designed specifically for the demanding world of mission critical On-Air Transmission and the rigours of Outside Broadcasts and the pressure of the Post environment.
Formed in 1997, Edifis are committed to continuing the application of
disk-based systems to areas traditionally the domain of VTRs such as
D-1 or Digital Betacam. The advantages of disk systems over tape are
well documented. No maintenance of mechanical parts or head changes required,
jobs finished quicker and a lower cost of ownership, are all reasons which
have persuaded clients to discard tape in favour of random access editing
systems or disk servers. However, the success of disk versus tape was restricted
by the limitations of the earliest disk technology. Low capacity storage,
limited I/O or even worse, heavily compressed video which made disks an absolute
non-starter for clients who relied on pristine images that had never been
near a J-PEG or MPEG encoder.
Edifis resolved to design affordable disk systems, which were high quality
and high capacity but achieved better results than their top-end VTR competitors.
The sheer number of applications we cover is testament to the versatility
of tape, which has remained dominant for so long. It is only now that disk
technology is available to mount a challenge to tape and Edifis are committed
to being at the forefront of development and delivery.
The hardened reliability of broadcast disk systems has been moved to the
range of colour grading solutions now available. The application of firmware
based technology has enabled Edifis to leepfrog solutions attempted by simpler
software based products. Firware offers the sped of dedicated hardware with
the advantages of software upgrades and extended features.
